Brook Promise's Jennings 'The Alton Towers Experience'

Although 'a rollercoaster ride' is quotidian sporting imagery, Kell Brook is much more specific when outlining what Michael Jennings has in store for him when the welterweights meet in Birmingham on Saturday night.

'Have you been to Alton Towers? You know that ride 'Oblivion'? Well, that's what it's going to be like. Exciting while it lasts but then it's going to be over all too quickly.

'I'm looking to impress.'

Kell was speaking after a tasty six-round spar with Birmingham's underrated light-middleweight Max Maxwell.

For those who know their small hall boxing, they'll be aware that Maxwell is much better than his 12-9-2 record; last time out he starched unbeaten Brian Rose in spectacular style. Maxwell is fit and came forward throughout the six rounds but found himself routinely peppered with blisteringly quick combinations by Brook who looked in good nick.

'So fast...very sharp, isn't he?' commented Maxwell afterwards. 'You think he's there doing nothing then bang-bang-bang!

'Every fight's a hard fight, don't get me wrong, but I think he'll have too much for Jennings.'

Brook, of course, feels exactly the same. The Sheffielder has been on a 'tag' for almost two months now after being convicted of assault arising from an incident in a Barnsley nightclub. The terms of the curfew are that Brook remains at home between 8pm and 6am and the boxer is mature enough to realise that the judge, as far as his preparations have gone, has done him a favour.

'It's (the tag) has made a massive difference. Previously you might go out for someone's birthday or down town and get in at 1 in the morning. Even though you're not drinking, on lime and soda or something, you can still feel rough.

'For the last ten weeks I've been home for eight and in bed for ten. It's the best preparation I've ever had.'
